And I Turned 18

Today, I completed living 18 years in this life, and the only connection between me and the country where I was born are some pictures, the passport and the Irish birth certificate.

My family came back to Palestine when I was still a baby, so I was too young to remember anything that happened to me in Ireland. I haven’t got the chance to go visit Ireland, yet, and I don’t really imagine how my life could have been if I lived there, but I am satisfied with what I’ve achieved while in Gaza.

I love Gaza, even if life is difficult in here. Whether you want to stay and live a good life, or travel outside, it’s all difficult and kind of unattainable. But sometimes I feel thankful for CLOSED GAZA, you know why? Because CLOSED GAZA has really taught me a lot of things.

It taught me never to give up. If I have a dream, I have to fight so hard to achieve it. Even if the situation around was bad.

I learned to always love: myself first and foremost, and everything around. For just by loving and respecting myself, people will love and respect me in return.

And to never wait for things in return, because the idea of loving and giving in itself is a way to give my life more meanings and aims.

I learnt that people differ. My sister and my friend are not ME, so I have to respect all the differences between people and deal with them as they are.

I learned that FAMILY is the most important thing in life. My mom, dad and siblings are the real people who will always be ready to give me a hand when I need help waiting for nothing in return. I learnt that they deserve being taken care after, and that I have to make my best not to lose them, because losing them means losing real love!

Gaza taught me that if I was stuck in a place, there would be so much to know about it. But one has to search, and search so well. I traveled inside Gaza. I learnt a lot of new things about it. I searched for its beauty and the ancient places in it, and read about them, I visited the places that are not well known in Gaza although important: libraries.

Travelling inside Gaza has broadened my sense of beauty and the importance of knowing about the world. My interest in countries and languages has widened. I really want to travel and do everything I want. I want to learn new things, have fun and new friends. I really want to talk the language I love in the country I really want to visit: China.

March 25, 1999- The Migdad’s were in Ireland- Belfast when they gave birth to a new baby girl. They named her: “Somaya”. Somaya now really hopes to get out from this big, beautiful, prison and wants to live a lot of new experiences… to learn more about the world… to teach people as much as she can… to share her experience in Gaza… and to visit her second home: IRELAND.
